If it binds, you could be interfering with the clutch action, and could pull the hose from it's fittings, creating a leak, and no clutch action/shifting. I have 05 Vulcan 2000. At 60,000 miles my adjusters started getting noisy. Oil change helped for awhile. Auto parts oil additives helped for awhile. Normally, you can start in gear if the clutch is pulled in. There is a switch on the clutch handle that looks after this. Could be out of adjustment, dirty, no good, etc. Give it a looksee. It's a '99 VN800A with Cobra exhaust. I did the Russian Wolf EPA mod, and also drilled out the plug covering the air idle mixture screw.It is very likely the receiver in the hub thats bent from misalignment, this will have to be fixed to make the speedo cable spin. A quick check is to remove the cable from the hub and spin with your fingers while looking for movement on the speedo needle. If it moves, your problem is in the hub. If it dont move, it may be you cable.Nothing is easier to diagnose than charging system issues, at least at first. Get your multimeter out, set it to DC Volts. Start the bike, rev it to 3,000+ rpm and again check the voltage across the battery posts. You should see a minimum of 13.5 v and would like to see 14.0 - 14.5 v but your new battery will need time to fully charge unless you took it home and charged it, which is a good thing to do.
